Common Orthopedic Procedures

Common Orthopedic Concerns

Orthopedic conditions are those which affect the musculoskeletal system. If it has to do with the joints, ligaments, bones, tendons, or muscles, an orthopedic doctor can help you with it. Orthopedic conditions may be the result of sudden trauma, as in the case of broken bones or dislocated shoulders, or come about as part of natural aging. Another potential source of orthopedic concerns is family history and genetics. Those who have a family with a history of orthopedic conditions may be more prone to certain medical conditions.

Conditions That Are Commonly Treated by An Orthopedic Doctor

Our musculoskeletal system is intricate and complex, and as a result, there is a broad range of conditions that can affect it. Many of these conditions require medical attention, preferably from a specialist that handles orthopedic concerns. Some common orthopedic medical problems include:

  • Arthritis – This condition is described as swelling and redness in and around a joint. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and countless others.
  • Osteoarthritis – This is the most commonly diagnosed arthritis and involves the steady degradation of cartilage in the affected joints. It most frequently appears in the knees, hips, spines, and hands.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis – Rheumatoid arthritis involves severe inflammation that can actually change the appearance of the affected body part and joints. There’s a special form that only affects children known as Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). Patients often outgrow this condition.
  • Bursitis – Bursas are a sac of fluid that serves as a form of cushion between various tissues in the body. They are especially common in the major joints in the body. Bursitis is a condition defined by inflammation of the bursa. Thankfully this condition is typically temporary.
  • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome – Passing through the cubital tunnel on the outside of the elbow can be found the Ulnar nerve. This condition results from that nerve becoming irritated, swollen and inflamed.
  • Kyphosis – Our spines should appear straight when viewed from behind. Those experiencing symptoms associated with kyphosis have an abnormal curve that gives them a hunchback appearance.
  • Osteoporosis – This condition is particularly common in older women and involves the thinning and weakening of the patient’s bones. Commonly occurring in the wrists, spine, or hips, it puts that patient at increased risk of broken bones.
  • Shoulder Problems – The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body, and as such, is prone to a broad range of orthopedic concerns.
