Preventing Arthritis

SpaceSeptember-min

Arthritis is a commonly diagnosed condition, but when people generally think of arthritis, they think of how it affects the joints, specifically in the fingers and knuckles. However, arthritis can occur in any joint where the tendons are painfully inflamed and stiff. Numerous factors cause this condition to arise, but there isn’t a cure yet for it. Nevertheless, there are plenty of steps that can be taken to prevent arthritis and help offset the occurrence.

What Causes Arthritis?

Before understanding what potentially causes arthritis, it’s essential to know what kinds of arthritis are there. There are three forms of arthritis, all of which share a commonality of symptoms, but develop differently. By understanding these differences, you can help adequately diagnose those symptoms with the help of your physician, and help further understand what’s causing your joint pain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – As a chronic inflammatory disorder of the joints, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling that could eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity. As an autoimmune disorder, it occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissue.

Osteoarthritis – The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage at the end joints of the bones deteriorates, as it usually occurs from factors such as with old age, obesity, repeated stress on the joints, and injuries.

Psoriatic Arthritis – This kind of arthritis affects the joints from psoriasis, a condition that causes red patches and scaly, dry skin. As a condition that affects any part of the body, psoriatic arthritis is chronic and can worsen over time if not treated.

All of these conditions can be prevented, as the steps you take can ultimately help offset the occurrence of these diseases.

How Can I Prevent Arthritis?

Consuming Omega-3 fatty acids from foods such as fish and flaxseed can be useful in preventing rheumatoid arthritis, especially for women. Weight also has a significant connection with the onset of arthritis, especially when it comes to the pressure that weight can put on the knees. Every pound you lose can take off three times the strain on your knees. Also, a proper diet can prevent arthritis by giving your metabolism the nutrients it needs to slow the progression of aging and keep the body’s functions healthy.

Are There Any Other Causes of Arthritis?

Accidents and injuries are a source of arthritis that sometimes can’t be avoided. Strenuous and physical activity can and will gradually tear at the joints and tendons, leading to arthritis even at early stages of development. In these cases, wearing the proper gear and other safety equipment can help protect against the onset of arthritis, especially if working with heavy equipment and working in repetitive motions.
